History of Udunuwara Divisional Secretariat

Divisional Secretariat, Udunuwara is situated in Kandy District in the central province. The division is surrounded by Yatinuwara ,Gangawata Korala, Doluwa and Udapalatha divisional secretariats in the central province and Mawanalla divisional secretariat in Sabaragamuwa province. There are 247 Villages, 5 Agrarian divisions, 9 samurdhi banks, 4 police stations and 2 MOH divisions in this division. This division is with great historic value and rich in places with national heritage such as Gadaladeniya, Lankathilaka, Embakka vihara.The community of this division is multi-cultural and lives in peacefully and harmony.

The civil administration is carried out by Udunuwara Divisional Secretariat and fulfills the requirement of community from birth to death. When consider the statistics related to the service delivery, there are 6820 number of samurdhi holders, 1764 of senior citizen allowance holders, 1830 of mahajanadhara holders etc.Further there are 54 government colonies and 1873 number of government grant/permit/lease holders in this division. As the largest division in the Kandy district vast category of social services, development programs and subsidies programs are carried out by the division. In 2020, 640 development programs arecarried out with the worth of Rs. 2,12,986,566.93 The population of Udunuwara Divisional Secretariat is 1,24,690 with number of 31,527 families.

The considerable amount of people in this division are government and private sector workers. The other community of the division are living with farming and farming related industries, small and medium scale industries etc. Udunuwara division is well known for traditional industries such as wood carving, brass, diyatharippu, and ancient “Kulu” and “Bera” industries.The Udunuwa Divisional Secreatariat is empowered by human resource, which is 1061 in number of staff. It consists of office staff, field officers such as grama niladhari, samurdhi officers and development officers.The human resource in this division is a great advantage to the division to deliver vast category of servicesefficiently and effectively to public satisfaction. With the intension of the modern technology and thecompetence staff,the organization can be developed to the efficient and effective center for service delivery. Hence as vision of 2035 it is identified that to be the pioneer of service delivery among divisional secretariats in Sri Lanka.
